The Australian Trade and Investment Commission – Austrade – contributes to Australia’s economic prosperity by helping Australian businesses, education institutions, tourism operators, governments and citizens as they:

  • develop international markets and promote international education
  • win productive foreign direct investment
  • strengthen Australia’s tourism industry
  • seek consular and passport services.

The business issue

Austrade embarked on a major business transformation and as part of that, it needed to review its current data analytics platforms.

Marketscape was commissioned to conduct an independent review into the tourism data analytics software and provide a recommendation on whether Austrade should continue investing in the current software or whether it should invest in another one.

The tourism data analytics software is a key tool to process, analyse and report data from the International Visitors Survey (IVS) and the Domestic Visitors Survey (DVS).

Conducted a number of activities, including:

  • consultations with key stakeholders to understand the need for the software
  • business and user requirements gathering and analysis
  • market scan for data analytics platforms
  • competitive analysis
  • market opportunity assessment
  • business case development, including cost-benefit analysis

The outcome

Marketscape provided a recommendations report to Austrade which outlined the user need for the software and a business case to support Austrade’s decision. The report provided recommendations on suitability of the current software solution and how it rates comparatively with any other solution.

Based on the report, Austrade was able to determine the best value and most strategic way to invest in the provision of these services into the future.
